Former WBC heavyweight champion Samuel Peter will make a return to the ring on June 4 as he features in the prizefighter-style ‘Super 8’ boxing tournament in Auckland, New Zealand.
According to FightNews, the Nigerian Nightmare will join Kali Meehan, Michael Sprott and Martin Rogan in the $500,000 tournament. It will be the 33-year-old’s first fight in three years having lost four of his last eight fights.
Peter beat Oleg Maskaev to win the WBC title in 2008 but lost the belt on his first defence against Vitali Klitchscko. He also lost a rematch against Vitali’s brother, Wladimir in 2010, ending his attempt to win a major title.
The June 4 event sees eight fighters competing in a quick-fire knock-out format over three rounds. Each fighter is guaranteed $15,000. Second round winners receive $30,000. The losing finalist earns $100,000 and the tournament winner receives $200,000. There are also knockout, best fight and fight of the night bonuses to make a total prize pool of $500,000.
