Abuja - The PDP National Chairman, Alhaji Adamu Mu’azu, said he would always work to protect the media due to its contribution to the emergence of democratic institutions in Nigeria.
This is contained in statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, by Mr Akin Oyegoke, Special Assistant to the PDP national chairman.
The statement applauded the contribution of the Nigerian media in their reportage.
It debunked the recent online media report which quoted the PDP national chairman as saying; “ I will not tolerate any negative media report’’.
The statement described the remark which the online media credited to the PDP national chairman at his maiden news briefing on assumption of office as misleading.
“We wish to state that the national chairman of the PDP during his chat with the newsmen covering the PDP spoke on various issues affecting the party and the nation,’’ it said.
It said that the party`s chairman at the briefing, gave a roadmap to reposition the party as it was visible in the current positive developments in the PDP.
The statement explained that the PDP national chairman did not at any time admonished members of the media as it was captioned in the said article.
According to the statement, the PDP national chairman clearly understands the constitutional role of the media as spelt out and will always work to protect it.
It, however, urged the media to abide by all ethics and privileges of the professions in their reportage, while it remained an unbiased umpire and showed transparency and neutrality always.
It charged newsmen to remember that democracy was the only vehicle to actualise the freedom that was enjoyed today in the country, adding that there was no alternative to democracy.
The statement emphasised that Mu`azu was very committed to the Nigerian project as the national chairman of the PDP under the leadership of President Goodluck Jonathan.
It called on all lovers of democracy to join the PDP because it is the only truly democratic party in the country. (NAN)
